K5 External Wall Board

Kingspan FAQ

Do I need a vapour barrier with Kingspan?

A vapour control layer is positioned on the inner side of the insulation materials to reduce vapour transfer within a building. Consult your building professional before installing insulation to see if a vapour barrier is required for your particular project. We recommend always installing a vapour barrier for that extra protection against condensation which can lead to mould and rot.

Is Kingspan flammable?

Kingspan thermoset insulation products including Kingspan Kooltherm and Kingspan Therma are ‘combustible’. This classification is based on running tests on small product samples through the Euroclass System. However, the Euroclass system was designed to test only the performance of products that line the perimeter of a room in the event a fire within that room. The small scale of the necessary tests means that they cannot take into account how the different materials used within a facade assembly may interact when exposed to fire.

How to cut Kingspan?

Kingspan insulation materials can be cut using fine-toothed saw. The board can be measured, marked, and placed on to a high surface with room for the saw to penetrate through the board.
Depending on which product and the product thickness, some products can also be cut with a sharp blade by scoring one side of the board, snapping over a hard edge, and scoring the other side of the board.

How to install Kingspan between rafters?

Before insulating between rafters consult a building professional to ensure it is the correct material and method for your project. The chosen insulation material can differ depending on each individual project.
To install Kingspan between rafters, first measure the spacing in between each rafter. In older buildings some of the spacings between rafters may be inconsistent, so it is important to measure and cut each individual board to fit each individual space.
Match the depth of the rafters to the insulation board thickness.
The board should then slot into the space with no fixings or adhesives necessary, If the board fits too tight a fine-toothed saw can be run down the edges of each board to allow for expansion in the wood.
Insulation boards or insulated plasterboard can then be applied to the rafters horizontally using the required fixings. This will improve thermal conductivity and reduce the chances of thermal bridging although it is not essential. The overlapping insulation used will depend on what the space is being used for such as storage or a living area.

Is Kingspan soundproof?

A common mistake made during projects is assuming standard PIR boards or Kingspan insulation products will make good soundproofing materials. Polyisocyanurate (PIR) boards are not soundproof. These materials are thermal insulation and specialise in controlling the thermal quality of the building and have very little acoustic value if any at all.
