Buy Floor Insulation Online

We have made buying floor insulation a simple and hassle-free process when you order with Trade Insulations. Floor insulation is installed in the floor to restrict the movement of heat, which allows for better thermal performance. The reduction in heat loss means that a property can retain heat better and therefore require less energy to keep it at a comfortable temperature. You can find floor insulation installed in many different property types such as homes, commercial buildings, garden rooms and even garages. The type of floor insulation required will always depend on your project specification. If you are unsure of the product you need, then reach out to a building professional or architect for advice before you place your order.

At Trade Insulations, we stock many floor insulation products, which are available in a wide range of thicknesses. Floor insulation can be installed in a new property or extension, and can also be installed as part of an upgrade or renovation. Upgrading or adding floor insulation can improve the thermal performance of a building.

What are the benefits of installing floor insulation

There are many benefits to installing floor insulation. The obvious benefit is that a properly insulated floor can make a building feel noticeably more comfortable. A reduction in heat transfer through the floor can make internal temperatures much easier to maintain and manage.

Other benefits include:

  • Reduction in heat loss through ground floors
  • Better thermal performance
  • Less cold areas at the floor level
  • Can help support building regulation compliancy
  • Some floor insulation products will improve acoustic performance
  • Reduced energy demand
  • A well-insulated property is more desirable

Floor insulation can also make a huge difference in older properties with suspended timber floors. Cold air that moves through a void beneath floorboards can make a room feel draughty. Floor insulation can combat this by reducing heat loss.

Which type of floor insulation do I need?

The type of floor insulation will depend on your project and its requirements. That being said, it is worth noting that different types of floor insulation will be suitable for different application types. For example, PIR, phenolic, EPS and XPS insulation boards are commonly used in solid floors. The way they are installed will depend on your bespoke specification. For example, some floor insulation may be installed either above or below a concrete slab, or even beneath screed or as part of a floating floor system. PIR boards such as Celotex general-purpose boards are popular, whereas the K103 floor insulation board by Kingspan is a popular phenolic insulation board.

Mineral wool can be installed between the joists of suspended timber floors. The flexible nature of mineral wool allows it to fit closely and can also absorb sound to improve acoustic performance.

PIR Floor insulation boards

PIR boards are one of the most widely used floor insulation product types. They achieve strong thermal performance across a relatively slim construction depth. This makes them useful where the floor height is limited. We have a range of different PIR boards on our website. This includes products such as the Kingspan TF70 range and Celotex general-purpose insulation boards. Other popular PIR boards include Recticel Eurothane General Purpose boards. Details such as compression strength and thermal conductivity ratings can be found on the product page as well as technical datasheets. You will also find other details on the product page, such as the lead time and price of the product.

PIR insulation can be used in many floor application types. Always refer to the manufacturer's datasheets for further application type information.

Phenolic Floor Insulation

Phenolic insulation is often chosen where high thermal performance is needed, but the floor depth is restricted. The Kingspan K103 Floorboard is a phenolic floor insulation product which achieves a lower thermal conductivity compared to PIR alternatives. Kingspan K103 can be used in solid concrete and suspended ground floor applications. They are useful in refurbishment projects where increasing the overall floor height may interfere with existing doors, stairs, adjoining rooms or thresholds.

Mineral Wool Floor Insulation

Mineral wool is available in slabs or rolls. Mineral wool is commonly installed between timber joists in suspended ground and intermediate floors. It is popular as it can slightly compress around joists and pipes. This makes it easy to achieve a closer fit within timber floor applications. It is worth noting that there must be adequate airflow to help protect timber components from moisture. Another advantage of mineral wool is that it can provide both acoustic and thermal properties. Helping to reduce the transfer of sound and heat. Both Rockwool Flexi Slabs and the RW range are popular mineral wool floor insulation products.

XPS Floor Insulation Boards

XPS insulation, which is otherwise known as extruded polystyrene, features a dense closed-cell structure. It is useful for floor applications where moisture resistance and compressive strength are important factors.

Popular XPS insulation includes the Greenguard range by Kingspan. Kingspan’s GreenGuard range is available in many different thicknesses. These are often used in commercial and industrial settings in areas with higher compressive loads.

EPS Floor Insulation

Expanded polystyrene, which is also known as EPS insulation, is a lightweight option for floors. It typically does not achieve the same thermal performance when compared to alternatives such as PIR or phenolic insulation. One benefit is that it is typically low-cost for its coverage. At Trade Insulations, we stock a variety of different EPS thicknesses to suit your project.
