Which type of floor insulation do I need?

For example, PIR, phenolic, EPS and XPS insulation boards are commonly used in solid floors. The way they are installed will depend on your bespoke specification. For example, some floor insulation may be installed either above or below a concrete slab, or even beneath screed or as part of a floating floor system. PIR boards such as Celotex general-purpose boards are popular, whereas the K103 floor insulation board by Kingspan is a popular phenolic insulation board.
Mineral wool can be installed between the joists of suspended timber floors. The flexible nature of mineral wool allows it to fit closely and can also absorb sound to improve acoustic performance.
PIR Floor insulation boards
PIR boards are one of the most widely used floor insulation product types. They achieve strong thermal performance across a relatively slim construction depth. Phenolic Floor Insulation
Phenolic insulation is often chosen where high thermal performance is needed, but the floor depth is restricted. The Kingspan K103 Floorboard is a phenolic floor insulation product which achieves a lower thermal conductivity compared to PIR alternatives. Kingspan K103 can be used in solid concrete and suspended ground floor applications. They are useful in refurbishment projects where increasing the overall floor height may interfere with existing doors, stairs, adjoining rooms or thresholds.
Mineral Wool Floor Insulation
Mineral wool is available in slabs or rolls. Mineral wool is commonly installed between timber joists in suspended ground and intermediate floors. It is popular as it can slightly compress around joists and pipes. This makes it easy to achieve a closer fit within timber floor applications. It is worth noting that there must be adequate airflow to help protect timber components from moisture. Another advantage of mineral wool is that it can provide both acoustic and thermal properties. Helping to reduce the transfer of sound and heat. Both Rockwool Flexi Slabs and the RW range are popular mineral wool floor insulation products.
XPS Floor Insulation Boards
XPS insulation, which is otherwise known as extruded polystyrene, features a dense closed-cell structure. It is useful for floor applications where moisture resistance and compressive strength are important factors.
Popular XPS insulation includes the Greenguard range by Kingspan. Kingspan’s GreenGuard range is available in many different thicknesses. These are often used in commercial and industrial settings in areas with higher compressive loads.
EPS Floor Insulation
Expanded polystyrene, which is also known as EPS insulation, is a lightweight option for floors. It typically does not achieve the same thermal performance when compared to alternatives such as PIR or phenolic insulation. One benefit is that it is typically low-cost for its coverage.
