Attic Insulation

Some people refer to the void space under a roof as either an attic or a loft. This space is usually above the main occupied spaces, however, it is still accessible. It is in the attic (or loft) that a lot of heat is lost in a building. This is why it is important to insulate an attic to trap heat and therefore keep a house warm.

The government state that there are differences between a loft room and an attic room, however, the type of insulation required to insulate a loft or attic is the same (depending on the space itself) Typically a loft is accessed by a fixed staircase and has the area converted as a living space. An attic is also accessed by a fixed staircase, however, it has the eaves area of the loft squared off to create a box room at the centre.

At Trade Insulations, we stock loft and attic insulation and are able to deliver nationwide. Placing an order is easy. Simply choose the product you require, add it to the basket and check out using our secure checkout.

What are the different types of loft insulation

There are many different brands of insulation to choose from when insulating your loft or attic space. You will find top brands on our website such as Knauf, Celotex and Rockwool. In addition to the brands, there are different types of loft insulation depending on the application. One of our biggest selling loft insulation products is the Knauf Loft Roll 44, however, we have left a breakdown of each type of loft insulation below to help you make your decision when purchasing.

A lot of people do not realise how effective loft insulation can be at insulating a home. Studies show that the average house could save £200 a year by just insulating an attic or loft space. Loft insulation is crucial as it can help reduce the amount of heat that is being lost. Check out our article on how loft insulation can prevent heat loss for a more in-depth look at this.

Loft insulation boards are materials used to insulate the attic or loft of a building. They are designed to reduce heat loss through the roof and improve the energy efficiency of a building. Loft insulation sheets are a cost-effective solution to reduce energy costs and improve comfort, especially during the winter months. Proper installation of the insulation boards is important for their effectiveness.

Loft insulation boards are suitable for both lofts and attics.

Loft Insulation Boards

You can buy loft insulation board from our website. Our loft insulation boards are available from 20mm in thickness up to 200mm in thickness. Most of the boards on our website have dimensions of 2400mm by 1200mm. This means that loft insulation boards with these dimensions have an area coverage of 2.88m2. This can give you an idea of how many boards you require for your loft or attic space. We advise ordering more boards than you require as it is better to be a bit over to account for potential errors. Loft insulation board can also be cut to size if required.

Popular loft insulation boards include Celotex's PIR insulation board and Kingspans Thermapitch TP10. The TP10 board is specifically designed for people who are trying to create a warm loft. This can be achieved by insulating both ventilated and unventilated roofs. Some people choose to use insulated plasterboard for use in lofts. Celotex's insulated plasterboard and Kingspans K118 insulated plasterboard are popular choices.

Reasons to Use Loft Insulation Board

Nearly a quarter of all heat is lost in the roof of a building. By using loft insulation boards in a loft or attic space, you can reduce the amount of heat lost in the home or building. By reducing heat loss, you can effectively retain heat in a home or building. This means that less energy is needed to keep your home or building warm. This can help save on energy bills as well as reduce your carbon footprint. In addition to this, the installation of loft insulation boards can improve the energy efficiency rating of a building. A more energy efficient and better performing building is more desirable in the market. This may even increase the value of a property. In conclusion, the top reasons to use loft insulation boards are as follows –

  • They can help retain heat in a building
  • They can help reduce energy usage in a building
  • They can help reduce your carbon footprint
  • They can improve the energy efficiency of a building

Using boards in addition to loft roll will further improve energy efficiency by retaining more heat in a building. You can purchase both boards and loft rolls from our website. At Trade Insulations, we stock a variety of loft insulation products.

Loft Insulation Rolls

Loft rolls are commonly made from glass or mineral wool. This is because glass and mineral wool are great insulating materials. You may hear people refer to this as fibreglass insulation. The fibres can trap air, which can lock in heat. Knauf Loft Roll 44 is popular due to its ease of installation. It is also combi cut, which means it is pre-perforated so that it can be cut to suit the application. A popular alternative to Knauf’s loft roll is Isovers Spacesaver Loft Roll. Loft roll is installed and can be rolled out and fitted between joists. The second layer of the loft roll can then be added at 90 degrees to the first layer and ceiling joists. Rockwool is another popular manufacturer of loft roll.
Loft roll insulation is also called blanket insulation and is an easy and cheap way to insulate a loft or attic. For warm roof insulation, you would need a combination of loft board insulation and insulation between the joists (loft roll or batts)

How does loft insulation reduce heat loss?

loft insulation is purposely manufactured for use in loft spaces to prevent heat loss in residential and commercial buildings. There are several types of loft insulation – from loft insulation boards to loft rolls. Loft insulation reduces heat loss by retaining heat in a building. This is often achieved by trapping air to prevent the excessive escape of heat. Furthermore, the installation of loft insulation improves the thermal envelope of the building. This refers to the structure that separates the air inside your home from the air outside.
When radiators remain on, heat rises through the property and often gets lost through the roof space. Did you know nearly a quarter of heat escapes through the roof of a building? This is mainly due to limited or poor insulation. Loft insulation can prevent the heat from escaping and keep the heat where it should be – inside your property!

With less heat being able to escape the property, it has a positive effect on climate change and global warming. In addition to this, loft insulation can save up to 40% of heating bills per year. The better the insulation quality, the less heat can escape. In short, it means that your heating does not need to be on for long periods at a time and energy is preserved.
At Trade Insulation we offer a wide range of loft insulation materials available online.

How do loft insulation boards prevent heat loss?

To sum up, PIR boards bonded to foil facings work by reflecting heat and transferring heat at a slow rate.
As heat rises within the property the low emissivity foil facings will stop the heat escaping and reflect the heat back into the property. In short, starting the heating process again from the top down. The PIR core also means if heated up, the rate the boards heats from one side of the other is low, meaning less heat will escape through to the other side of the board.
Loft boards are installed in the roof rafters.
Firstly, measure and cut the boards to size to fit the length and width of the space.
Secondly, push the boards in between the rafters leaving a cavity space at the back. Make changes around sockets and openings and fill the entire space.
Thirdly, install insulation boards or insulated plasterboards horizontally over the top of the rafters using the required fixings.
Cut the boards with a fine-toothed saw or sharp knife. In addition to this, call a specialist if your loft is tight or complex.

How does loft roll prevent heat loss?

Glass and stone mineral wool materials work by trapping and holding air still. Porous materials such as mineral wool work to control and reduce noise by allowing air movement into the fabric of the material. The layer of insulation traps heat inside the rooms below the loft, so the air within your property stays warmer for longer. It also keeps cold air from outside entering your property. This means you do not have to heat your home as much to achieve the same temperature in each room.
Loft rolls are installed in the floor joists in the roof.

Firstly, measure and cut the rolls to size to fit the length of the space.
Secondly, push the rolls in between the joists. After that, make changes around sockets and openings. Ensure all joists are completely filled.
Thirdly, lay a roll of insulation horizontally across the top of the joists.
Cut the rolls with a fine-toothed saw, sharp knife, or large scissors. A sharp knife recommended for loft rolls.
Furthermore, call a specialist for hard-to-reach areas in tight spaces.

What Is Glass wool?

Glass wool insulation, also known as fibreglass is made from glass fibres. The glass gets heated to a very high temperature until it melts. The materials are then spun quickly to create fibres. These fibres are bound together to be used as insulation, when the glass fibres are bound together the process traps small pockets of air between the glass fibres, giving thermally insulating properties. Brands include Knauf, Superglass, and Isover.

What Is Mineral wool?

Mineral wool is iare made from a selection of raw materials, such as stone. The raw materials get melted at high temperatures and are then spun to form fibres, like wool. Mineral wool is also known as Stone wool, Rock wool or Slag wool insulation. Mineral wool insulation brands include Rockwool.

On our website, you can find a wide variety of loft roll. From Rockwool Loft Roll to Knauf Loft Roll

How are loft rolls manufactured?

Loft rolls are made from mineral wool or fibreglass. Fibreglass is also referred to as glass wool and has excellent insulative properties. Fiberglass wool is manufactured by heating fine fibers of glass and sand. The molten sand and glass are then spun through an ultra-fine mesh. Binding material is added and then the mixture is cooled to give it a wool-like texture. This process is quite similar to how candy floss is made. The blend of materials is then further heated and calendared to give it strength and stability. This clever manufacturing process traps pockets of air between the glass. It is the pockets of air which help the product achieve high thermal performance.
You can find glass wool insulation on our website from brands such as Knauf and Isover. A lot of insulation companies are now also using recycled glass to manufacture fibreglass insulation rolls, which makes them environmentally friendly.

How To Cut Loft Rolls?

There are several ways that you can cut loft rolls. Loft insulation rolls can be easily cut using a utility knife or carving knife. In addition to this, loft roll can also be cut with shears. We suggest that you mark your measurements on the roll before you make any cuts. Some products such as Knauf Loft Roll 44 even come combi cut, which gives you greater flexibility on your installation. Remember that loft rolls can produce dust when cut. They may also be an irritant to the skin and eyes so wear appropriate PPE to counter this.

How many loft rolls would I need for my loft?

The amount of loft roll required is dependent on your loft space and the area it needs to cover. You can work out the area of your loft by measuring the width and length of the space in meters. When you multiply these figures together, it will give you the m2 area coverage.
All of the products on our website have the total coverage in m2 outlined on the product pages to make it easy for you to work out how many packs you need. We do advise that you order 10% more than you require for wastage. It is always better to be a little bit over rather than short. If you are layering the product up then make sure you account for this. If you do need help when ordering then do not hesitate to get in contact with us. Our friendly team can help assist you in finding the perfect product.

What is the difference between Knauf and Isover Loft Roll

Knauf and Isover are both highly regarded companies when it comes to loft insulation rolls. Knauf Loft Roll 44 and Isover Spacesaver Roll are very similar in specification. Both loft rolls have a thermal conductivity of 0.44 m/Wk. Isover Spacesaver Loft Rolls have slightly more coverage across thicknesses and also are slightly denser. Both products have a Euroclass A1 rating, which means they are both classified as non-combustible. Knauf Loft Rolls and Isover Loft Rolls are made from glass mineral wool and are both pre-perforated for greater flexibility. You can find detailed specifications on our product pages, however, the products are very similar.

How thick should loft insulation roll be installed

UK current regulations state that blanket insulation should have a total depth of 250mm to 270mm when used in a loft or attic space. This can be achieved by layering the loft roll to meet the current regulations. It is worth noting that previously the UK building regulations stated that 200mm was the recommended depth. Older properties may also only have a depth of 100mm, which means they should be upgraded to meet current standards. Low blanket insulation depth means that less heat can be trapped and therefore it does not benefit from full insulative qualities. Some property developers may not be aware of new building regulations introduced in June 2023, which means that properties will have to perform better in terms of energy efficiency. Installing loft roll can help property developers to conform with this.

Loft Insulation Between Rafters

This is the insulation that is fitted in between the rafters of a roof. Most often people use insulation boards or mineral wool to insulate the rafter space. On our website, you can find loft insulation (between rafters). Ceiling insulation can be combined with rafter-level insulation in an existing converted loft space.

The benefits of insulating a loft

There are many benefits to insulating a loft, which we have outlined below.

  • It reduces the energy needed to warm a home by preventing unnecessary heat loss
  • Loft insulation installs can lower your carbon footprint
  • It can lower energy costs
  • A loft insulation install improves the energy efficiency of a property
  • It can increase the value of a property
  • Loft insulation can prevent water pipes / tanks from freezing
  • it creates a barrier to trap heat

Heat rises, which means heat can be lost through the roof. Loft insulation will prevent heat from escaping through the roof. It keeps your property warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. These components will make your living or working space a more comfortable environment and can result in lower monthly energy bills. Installing the correct insulation required for your building can also improve energy efficiency. Specific loft insulation materials can also be provided for moisture resistance to prevent mould or rot and other insulation materials can increase safety by improving fire resistance. Mineral wool is great for use in lofts or attics as it is classed as non-combustible. In addition to this, it is lightweight and easy to install.

OVOenergy has kindly put together a guide to loft insulation, which details the full pros and cons of different types of loft insulation.

How much loft insulation do I need?

To find out how much insulation you need, you need to work out the area coverage for your loft space. Multiplying your width and length will give you the area coverage for the space. Most loft insulation boards have an area coverage of 2.88m2. Loft rolls may differ depending on the product itself. Our website includes full coverage information on each product so you can work out exactly how much you need. It is always better to order more loft insulation rather than less. Loft rolls should be layered, which means you may have to order double to achieve the required depth. If you need help ordering loft insulation, get in touch with us and we can help.
