Bonded Plasterboard

Insulated plasterboard can be used in a variety of applications. This includes loft conversions, lining external walls, and internal partitioning at home. It is available in a range of materials, sizes, and thicknesses to ensure the right product is available to suit your insulation needs. Insulated plasterboard is most often used to line external walls. The external walls tend to be brick walls that do not provide effective insulation. In addition to insulated plasterboard, we also sell many plasterboard types from brands such as Knauf plasterboard. This includes standard plasterboard, which is not bonded plasterboard like insulated plasterboard is. Insulated plasterboard is when insulation is bonded to plasterboard.

Insulated plasterboard is a popular product used to improve insulation in both homes and commercial buildings. It can be used to create a barrier between the external environment and the living or working space. This means you can create comfortable spaces while benefiting from PIR's thermal properties. If you are unsure on what you need, get in touch with our team and we may be able to advise you on the best insulated plaster board for your project.

What is insulated plasterboard?

Plasterboard with insulation is a 2 in 1 product. Furthermore, insulated plasterboard is an innovative way of combining plasterboard and insulation without having to purchase two different boards. Most insulated plasterboards consist of a plasterboard layer, which is bonded to a rigid polyisocyanurate foam (PIR) layer. This finished product means that the plasterboard benefits from thermal protective qualities. These thermal qualities can help reduce heat loss in a building and therefore save energy. Another benefit to using insulated plasterboards is that they are easy to install. Insulated plasterboards are also referred to as “thermal insulated plasterboards”, or even quite simply “thermal plasterboard”. In addition to this, you might hear people call it PIR insulated plasterboard. This is because of the PIR layer that is added to the product. Bonded PIR is effectively used to turn plasterboard into insulated plaster board. PIR is widely used in the construction industry and is one of the most efficient insulation materials.

Insulated plasterboards have gained popularity in recent years due to its affordability, especially for lining external walls. It is a cost-effective solution in comparison to others. This is because it can cut down installation times as well as the need for purchasing two separate products instead of one.

Our PIR insulated plasterboard range consists of popular brands such as Kingspan Kooltherm and also Celotex. The highest demand online is for Celotex PL4000 and also Kingspan Kooltherm K118 insulated plasterboards. These are both notably the best insulated plasterboard products in terms of popularity. Both of these insulated boards come in a variety of thicknesses. They have many applications such as in solid masonry walls and in timber frame builds as well as rafters and joists. Celotex insulated plasterboard can reduce your energy consumption by up to 50% by reducing heat loss and keeping your house warmer in the winter. During the summer Celotex insulated plasterboard will keep your house cooler.

Insulated plasterboard sizes

Thermal plasterboard can be purchased from our website in thicknesses ranging from 27.5mm up to 93mm. When purchasing insulated plasterboard, it is important to know what thickness to go for. We always advise that you speak with your architect or a building professional before purchasing. In general, it is better to use a greater thickness for walls. Building regulations may also require a certain thickness for the application. Your local authority or building management can provide guidance on this.

When installing thermal plasterboard on solid brick walls, it will generally require a greater thickness than cavity walls. This is because cavity walls are more insulating. More thickness can also help reduce noise travelling through walls. When using insulated plasterboards for ceilings, it is better to use a lighter weight/thickness. We do not recommend using adhesives to fix insulated plasterboards to ceilings, however for installation advice we always say that you should consult with a building professional.

Insulated plaster board is most often sold on our website in the standard size – 2400mm x 1200mm

Does thermal plasterboard work?

Thermal Plasterboard, which is also known as insulated plasterboard is a great choice of insulation. People often ask does thermal plasterboard work? and the answer is simply yes. Thermal plasterboard is great because it doubles up as an insulation board and plasterboard. This means it has the benefits of both of these product types. Another major advantage of insulated plasterboard is that the installation time is cut down in half. This is because instead of installing an insulation board and then plasterboard, you can just make the one install. Doing this is also a cost-effective solution. PIR is a material used to provide thermal qualities. A thicker thermal plasterboard will also provide more protection against sound.

How to cut insulated plasterboard?

Thermal plasterboard is easy to cut or trim into different shapes. This is ideal when the application is a bit tricky and you need to cut the thermal plasterboard into irregular shapes. It is worth noting that cutting your board wrong can render the insulation ineffective and can even cause damage to the building structure. This means it is important to know how to cut insulated plasterboards properly. Insulated plasterboards may need to be cut down into smaller sections. Cutting plasterboard can be a challenging and messy process if you do not follow the steps outlined below.

  • Before cutting thermal plasterboard, it is important that you measure size you need using a tape measure.
  • Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a straight line along the measurement
  • Use a spirit level to ensure that the pencil markings are straight.
  • Use a Stanley blade to score and ident the plasterboard
  • Cut along the idented line using a saw at a 45 degree angle

You can also use a Stanley blade to make the cut, however we suggest only using the Stanley blade to make the initial markings. This is because a saw down an indented line will result in a cleaner cut. It is recommended that you wear approriate PPE. This includes eye, hand and respiratory protection. For further advice, contact a health and safety professional or seek guidance from the HSE

Measuring Area Coverage

When ordering thermal plasterboard, it is important to know how many boards you need to order by working out the area coverage. Measuring the coverage is simple. A tape measurer and calculator is all you need to work out coverage. If you want to measure the coverage of a wall or other application area, simply take the height measurements and also the width. The next step is to multiply the height by the width to give you the area in m2. For example a wall that is 9 meters x 4 meters would equal 36m2. If you took the measurement in mm then you need to divide the calculated figure by 1000000 to give the total area in m2.

Most insulated plasterboards that we sell are 2400mm x 1200mm, which is equal to 2.88m2 in coverage. To find out how many boards you need, simply divide the area you need by the coverage amount per board. Our example earlier would mean that 12.5 boards are required when purchasing boards with 2.88m2 coverage for a 36m2 area. (36 / 2.88 = 12.5)
When buying PIR insulated plasterboard, you will always want to purchase more boards than you need to allow for errors. It is better to have more than not enough.

The benefits of using PIR insulated plasterboards

There are many benefits to using thermal plasterboards. A major benefit to using thermal plasterboard is that it can cut down installation time. This is because thermal plasterboard has PIR bonded to the plasterboard to provide thermal qualities. This means that the boards effectively acts as a cost effective 2-1 solution. It provides the best of both worlds – using both plasterboard and PIR insulation in one product. Furthermore, it can often work out cheaper to insulate your walls with insulated plasterboard than buying both aspects separately. Another benefit is that it is easy to install. In addition to this, it is suitable for many applications.

Our customers use thermal plasterboards for applications such as loft conversions, lining external walls, ceilings and internally paritioning buildings. Enhanced thermal qualities of insulated plasterboard means that there is less heat loss in a building. This reduces the need for energy to warm a building. This reduction of energy results in lower bills as well as less impact on the environment. Thicker thermal plasterboards have good acoustic qualities therefore reducing noise pollution.

Thermal Insulated Plasterboard Applications

Below are some common applications of thermal insulation plasterboards.

  • Loft Conversions
  • Lining External Walls
  • Ceilings
  • Internally Partitioning Buildings

The purpose of PIR thermal plasterboard is to provide insulation against the cold and heat in a building. Thermal plasterboards can be used to reduce heat loss/gain from timber-framed roofs. This is done by filling the cavity in between attic rafters with insulated plasterboard.

In insulated external walls, insulated plasterboards are used to block the thermal bridging between timber frames in a wall and the internal rooms of your house. Thermal insulated plasterboards also provide excellent insulation for both loft conversions and insulated external walls.

Internal partitioning can be achieved by using insulated plasterboards between studs or rafters in the space that you want to divide.

How much does insulated plasterboard cost?

The price of the thermal insulated plasterboard is dependent on the specifications of your project. We have our best prices on insulated plasterboard. Bulk buying is a cost-effective way of saving money. Why pay more for insulation when you can get it for less at Trade Insulations. We save our customers £1000s per year. At Trade Insulations, we take pride in offering expert advice, speedy delivery, and only the best customer service. Our trade prices are available for everybody. Top brands, trade prices is the motto.

As mentioned previously, purchasing thermal insulated plasterboards can be more cost-effective than buying and installing both plasterboard and insulation board separately. This is because it is quicker to install and therefore can save a lot of time on larger projects.

Installing Insulated Plasterboard

There are various ways to fix insulated plasterboard. The application type will determine the best method of installing the thermal plasterboard. For example, we do not suggest that you dot and dab the board when used in ceilings. This is because gravity can put extra force on the board so we suggest using fixings. The dot and dab method is a good option for installing walls. This is because it is quick as it uses adhesives to stick the boards to the wall. Before installing any insulation, make sure that the area is clean, dry and free from excess materials.

Plasterboard in general is easy to fix. Using fixings can make the boards more stable and may also improve the performance of the boards. Below are some types of thermal plasterboard fixings.

  • Plugs
  • Masonry nails
  • Hammerfix screws
  • Drywall screws

Kingspan have provided us with the installation video below. The video highlights how to install the boards using the dot and dab method.
