What are wallboards used for?

Standard plasterboards (wallboards) are used to create walls or barriers in interior spaces. People commonly use wallboards to separate spaces in rooms or to even create additional rooms within an open space. This is called partitioning. Additionally, wallboards can be used to create a ceiling. A lot of builders also use wallboards for decorative purposes. For example, wallboards can be used to create media walls or partitions to aesthetically improve living spaces. Wallboards are available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses to suit the application.

Can wallboards be painted?

Wallboards can be sanded and painted over to give a clean decorative finish.

White Plasterboard

Wallboard is also referred to as white plasterboard. This is because the wallboard features a white or ivory paper facing. The colour of the paper facing is why people call it white plasterboard. The white paper facing helps people to easily identify the plasterboard. Other types of plasterboard feature different colour paper faces. For example, fire rated plasterboard has a pink paper facing. All the top UK insulation brands use the same colour for different types of plasterboard. This is to conform to an industry standard and therefore help people to easily identify what each plasterboard is. Colours of the plasterboard range depending on its protective qualities. For standard wallboard, it will be white plasterboard.

How To Store Wallboard

Wallboards should be stored in a clean and dry environment. This is to prevent any damage that can be caused by harsh weather conditions. For this reason, we recommend that you store them inside. It is also worth noting that the packs can be heavy so ideally should be lifted with a forklift truck when transported. Wallboards can crack under pressure so they should not be stacked more than one high. Please ensure that extra caution is taken when moving the wallboards. This is to prevent damage that may occur to the plasterboard from being bumped. Pay special attention to the corners to prevent them from being knocked.

How To Install Wallboards

Wallboards can be installed easily fixed onto timber joists or rafters to before the decoration stage. When we say decoration stage, we are referring to the plastering or painting of the plasterboard itself. Fixing the wallboards can create a neat wall finish. In addition to this, plasterboards can be applied to ceilings, walls and even wooden rafters in loft spaces.

Before you apply the wallboard, it is important that you measure the relevant area so you can know how much wallboard is required. If the plasterboard needs cutting then you can cut these to size. Remember to consider openings such as outlets and windows when cutting. Plasterboard can be cut with an ordinary timber saw or scored with a plasterboard knife and carefully snapped along the line.
Wallboards can be fixed onto timber frames with screws and tools. Screws should be fixed at 10-20cm intervals and should not be too deep as the boards may crack. When applying plasterboard, make sure the board edge is positioned to the centre of the uprights. If you are joining boards then ensure they are tightly butted together. Stagger the boards where possible so that your seams do not end up on the same stud. The reason you should do this is to reduce the possibility of cracks developing when you apply your skim plaster finish.

Once the boards are secured and fixed into place they can be decorated or plastered. Scrim tape should be applied to all board joins and corner beads to try and prevent the board from crumbling and cracking during the plastering process.

It is important to consult a building professional before you start any work on a building project. This is due to regulatory requirements and also health and safety risks. Ensure you have the correct PPE and equipment required before starting any job.
