Xtratherm insulation PIR boards are an insulation material designed for multi-purpose use applications to improve the thermal performance within a residential or commercial building. The board size is 1200mm by 2400mm and come in a range of thicknesses from 25mm to 150mm. They provide a thermal conductivity of 0.022W/mK. The boards are made up of a fibre-free, rigid, polyisocyanurate core which is bonded to a several layers of low emissivity composite foil on each side of the board during the manufacturing process. The boards are lightweight and easy to cut, handle, and install.
They are made CFC and HCFC free with zero Ozone Depletion Potential and Zero Global Warming Potential. By installing insulation into your property, you are reducing the amount of heat escaping your home. By doing this you are helping to make changes by contributing to tackling climate change and global warming.
The Xtratherm PIR boards are extremely durable and long lasting. When installed correctly following the relevant guidelines and building regulations the Xtratherm PIR insulation boards should achieve the same lifespan as the relevant buildings.

Xtratherm thin-R range provides a thermal conductivity that is among the lowest. Xtratherm Thin-r boards are manufactured to strict dimensional tolerances, enabling the boards to be fitted tightly together. That reduces air leakage through the construction and associated heat losses through convection. Xtratherm Thin-r contains gas tight aluminium facings that form a low emissivity surface which, when facing a cavity reduces the heat loss through radiation, cutting the overall rate of heat loss. Xtratherm Thin-r excellent lambda value and therefore low thickness allows constructions to be thinner than they would be with other insulation material With the excellent thickness to performance ratio (R-value) of Xtratherm Thin-R less material is required to achieve the best performance levels asked for in the new building regulations.
Xtratherm PIR insulation boards can be installed in a range of methods. These methods include:
- Floor insulation – below and above concrete applications
- Wall Insulation – internal and external wall applications
- Roof insulation – pitched roofs and flat cold roof applications

 Storage:
Insulation boards should be stored indoors in a weatherproof space on a flat surface. If indoor storage is not an option, make sure the boards are covered with the correct weatherproof materials. If the boards get a little wet, the boards should be wiped over and left to dry before using. If the boards are too wet, they should not be used.
Cutting PIR boards:
Insulation board can be cut using a fine-toothed saw or a Stanley blade.
To cut with a saw, measure and mark the boards if necessary. Place the boards on a higher surface with room below for the saw to cut through.
To cut with a Stanley blade, measure and mark the boards if necessary. Use the blade to score the board on one side. Then snap the board over a hard edge and score the other side of the board with the blade.
Installation notes:
Protective gear such as gloves, face masks, protective clothing and eye goggles are recommended when cutting and handling insulation boards as the particle’s produced can irritate the skin and eyes and can be harmful if inhaled.
Installation guide:
Step 1:
Insert wall ties at a maximum of 600mm centres, one block course below the damp-proof course. Secure cavity boards are tight against the inner leaf with a retaining clip on approved wall ties. Maintain a 50mm residual cavity to suit all exposure zones. Ensure a minimum 25mm residual cavity is maintained.
This may have to be increased to suit conditions. Place wall ties at a maximum of 900x450mm centres and secure each board with a minimum of 3 wall ties.
Step 2:
Ensure block joints are fully bonded with unbroken mortar.
Fix wall ties 225mm vertically and 150mm horizontally from face of unbonded jambs. Ensure wall ties (Cavity) are kept clean of mortar and are sloped towards outer leaf.
Step 3:
Then repeat the process and apply the next outer leaf layer and continue to apply the insulation as the wall Is being built.
A cavity board should be used to keep cavity clean. Xtratherm corner boards and preformed reveal panels may be fitted to provide robust detailing. Xtratherm Hyclips can be used to secure boards tightly against inner leaf at sills and wall plate etc. where wall ties are inappropriate.
