Description

130mm Kooltherm Cavity Closers

Kingspan Kooltherm cavity closers are made up of a high-quality, unplasticized (PVC-U) extrusion. The cavity closers are designed for closing cavities to maintain continuous insulation around wall openings in masonry cavity, timber frame and steel frame system wall constructions. This product is suitable for timber, metal, and PVC window frames.

The cavity closer box section is manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). This product successfully prevents thermal bridging and the PVC-U box forms a damp-proof barrier and key for the direct application of plaster. The section is unaffected by air-transfer and prevents condensation, pattern straining, and mould growth generally associated with tradition methods of closing cavities. This product requires simple construction avoiding the need to cut bricks, blocks, or special reveal blocks.

Kingspan Kooltherm cavity closers are extremely durable and when installed correctly will have an indefinite life, its durability depends on the supporting structure and the conditions of its use. The cavity closer product is lightweight, and packaging is compressed ensuring handling and installation is quick and easy. The slabs are 2400mm and available in thicknesses between 50mm and 150mm with a thermal conductivity of 0.022w/mK.

Key Features:

  • High-performance material
  • Low thermal conductivity
  • Weather resistant
  • Rectangular shape and rigid finish
  • Moisture resistance
  • Prevents mould, condensation, and rot
  • Non-deleterious material
  • Increases energy efficiency of the property
  • Available for new builds, refurbishments, and extensions
  • Can be fitted with door / window frames as a combined unit
  • For use in England and Wales only
  • Restrictions apply based on building type

Cutting:

Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closers can be cut by measuring and marking to ensure an accurate fit and cutting with a fine-toothed saw on higher surface to allow the saw to cut through. The closers should be cut in a way that cross-sectional cuts are square. When removing flanges from larger sections, this should be cut by scoring one side of the join and snapping. Then score the other side of the join if necessary.

The Cavity Closer sections can be butted together however they should be limited to no more than one join per frame side.

To enable good square alignment, machine-cut ends should be butted the same to those cut on site.

A Jointing Strip can be used to align and attach the two abutting sections as sections are being installed.

Aluminium foil tape (no less than 100 mm wide) can be applied around the joint to prevent water tracking.

Packaging and Storage:

The polyethylene packaging of Kingspan Insulation products is fully recyclable. The packaging should not be considered sufficient for outside protection. The boards should be stored on a flat surface inside a well-ventilated building. If, however, indoor storage is not an option, then they should be stacked clear of the ground, and protected with a polythene and weatherproof material.

Take care when transporting, handling, and storing the insulation materials to prevent damage occurring. The Kooltherm Cavity Closers should not be exposed to excessive heat to prevent product distortion. Do not take the material out of their packaging until installation is ready for immediate use and restore at the end of each working day.

If sections have been allowed to get wet, they should not be used.

How are Kooltherm Cavity Closers installed? – New Walls

Install Cavity Closers as the wall is being assembled by installing individual sections or creating the frame first and then installing (See below).

Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer fixing ties slot into the cavity side of the profile and key into the mortar bed of the outer masonry skin. NB Fixing ties cannot be used when two sections are joined back-to-back.

the fixing flange should always overlap the masonry by 15 mm (min.), be tight to the masonry and securely fixed with a suitable masonry fixing to the masonry through the holes provided in the fixing flange. Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer should fi t tightly into the cavity opening and no gaps should be left between the closer and either wall leaf.

An appropriate lintel and damp-proof course are incorporated at the head.

Where an insulated lintel is used a head closer section will not be required and the jamb sections of closer will butt up against the lintel. If required, a Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer section can be used at the head where a separate lintel is used for each leaf

Installing Individual Sections:

Install the sill, jamb, and head sections of the frame individually as the walls is being built.

Sills – cut the sections to match the precise width of the opening.

Jambs – cut sections long enough overhang the sill by 50mm and cut the fixing flange as necessary so the section can fit into the cavity under the sill edge of opening.

Head – cut the section long enough to overhang the jambs by 50mm each side and remove the flange as necessary to ensure fit.
