Optim-R Roofing
Kingspan Optim-R Roofing System is an insulation material made up of a rigid vacuum panel with a microporous core with a metallized film facing designed mainly for the use of industrial and commercial buildings. This product is paired with infill Flex Strips.
The microporous core is evacuated and sealed in a thin, gas tight envelop of film providing an incredible thermal conductivity of just 0.007W/mK, creating the thinnest possible solution to insulation projects. The thermal performance of Optim-R is five times better than commonly used insulation materials. The Optim-R slabs are a thin panel saving space and creating insulation solutions for small spaces.
The Optim-R Roofing panels are available in a wide range of lengths (300-1200mm), widths (300-600mm) and thickness from 20mm to 50mm to provide a fitting suitable every application.
KEY FEATURES:
- Available for new builds or refurbishments
- 150 kPa at 10% compression
- Available in square or rectangular panels
- Bespoke design service
- Accompanying product available to ensure accurate fit – Flex Strips
- Five times better than standard insulation materials
- Long lasting and durable
- Vapour resistant
- Enhances U-values in areas that are recognised as reducing thermal performance
- Non-deleterious material
- Kingspan Infill Flex Strips:
- Flex strips are made up of a high-performance rigid thermoset phenolic polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulant with glass tissue facings bonded to each side. Once the OPTIM-R panels have been installed, the Kooltherm flex strips are designed to infill remaining spaces below 300mm and around problems areas such as penetrations.
Cutting:
Kingspan OPTIM-R panels should not be cut or pierced. The substrate must be clean, dry, and level with no sharp objects or edges. To cut of the Kingspan OPTIM-R flex strips should be done using a fine-toothed saw, or by scoring the strip with a sharp knife and snapping the board over a straight edge and then cutting the facing on the other side. To achieve close-butting joints and continuity of insulation ensure accurate trimming of the flex strips.
Durability:
When installed correctly and protected from damage, the Kingspan OPTIM-R Roofing Systems can provide reliable long term thermal performance that will continue to last for the entire lifetime of the building.
The Kingspan Optim-R range should not be used with solvent-based adhesive systems. Damaged board should not be used including boards that have been in direct contact with solvents or acids. The boards core and facings resist attack by microbial growth or mould and do not provide food benefits to vermin.
Packaging and storage:
Kingspan packaging is completely recyclable and should not be considered adequate for outdoor protection. The Kingspan OPTIM-R Roofing System should be stored inside a building and raised off the floor. If indoor storage is not an option, the correct weather proofing materials should be applied to protect the panel from the elements.
Kingspan OPTIM-R panels should not be walked on or used for storage of construction materials. A protective foot or crawl board should be used during the installation process.
Optim-R Roofing Systems can be installed in a range of methods. These methods include:
- Under membrane roofing system
- Inverted roofing system
- Single ply roofing system
- Above and below terrace systems

Can you cut OPTIM-R?
Optim-R insulation panels should not be cut and should be ordered to fit your specific project in the shape and thickness required. Although the OPTIM-R panels cannot be cut, the panels are used alongside Kooltherm Flex Strips. The Flex strips can be cut using a fine-toothed saw or sharp knife to fit specific applications under 300mm in length of width.
Where can OPTIM-R be installed?
OPTIM-R can be installed within roof applications in a variety of methods. The OPTIM-R flooring system range is also available for multiple floor applications and methods. See the link to OPTIM-R flooring systems below:
How do you install vacuum insulation panels?
For use on terraces –
Ensure insulation complies with the relevant building standards.
Step 1:
Traditional insulation materials can be installed on the terrace deck however this could create a step up. The insulation can be installed both on top of and on the underside of the terrace. To prevent risk of condensation the insulation must be balanced correctly.
This also could create a step up and an unsightly height difference in the ceiling below. The thin build of OMTIM-R allows for much lower thresholds when compared to general insulation materials.
The Kingspan Optim-R roofing system comes with a supporting design service. Each layout illustrates the size, number, and location of each optima-R panel and any optima-R flex infill strips.
When installing the optima-R system, the deck should be clean, dry and free from protrusions.
Step 2:
The vapour control layer should be bonded to the deck, a protection layer should then be bonded over the vapour control layer.
Step 3:
The Kingspan optima-R flex strip should be installed along two edges. The Kingspan Optima-R panels and flex infill strips are then laid and bonded according to the designs provided by Kingspan. Insulation Optimal-R panels are laid and bonded in a chessboard pattern with joints light butted. Smaller panels fill the gaps to ensure an accurate fit. Kingspan Optim-R flex strips of the same thickness as the Optim-R panels fill any gaps where the Optim-R panels do not accurately fit.
Step 4:
The Optim-R panels are overlaid with Kingspan rigid board insulation materials.
Step 5:
A minimum 25mm thick insulation upstand is installed around the perimeter of the terrace.
The waterproofing membrane is bonded over the whole insulated area.
Step 6:
A cover flashing is installed around the perimeter of the terrace. A range of finishes including paving slabs can be used over the insulated terrace.
The thin build-up allows even levels to create a smooth transition between inside and outside whilst removing the need for a step up.
