Kingspan Thermabate is a cavity closer made up of a high-quality, unplasticized (PVC-U) extrusion with a fibre-free rigid thermoset (PUR) core. The cavity closers are designed for insulation applications to maintain continuous insulation around wall openings in masonry cavity, timber frame and steel frame system wall constructions. The cavity closer box section is manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The ThermAbate product is lightweight, and packaging is compressed ensuring handling and installation is quick and easy. The slabs are 3000mm and available in thicknesses between 50mm and 150mm with a thermal conductivity of 0.034w/mK.

This product successfully prevents thermal bridging. The PVC-U box forms, damp-proof barrier, and key allow the direct application of plaster. The section is unaffected by air-transfer and prevents condensation, pattern straining, and mould growth generally associated with tradition methods of closing cavities. This product requires simple construction avoiding the need to cut bricks, blocks, or special reveal blocks. Kingspan Thermabate cavity closers are extremely durable and when installed correctly will have a lifespan that will last for as long as the building does.

Cutting:

Kingspan Thermabate closers can be cut by measuring and marking to ensure an accurate fit and cutting with a fine-toothed saw on a higher surface to allow the saw to cut through. When removing flanges from larger sections, this should be cut by scoring one side of the join and snapping. Then score the other side of the join if necessary.

There should ideally be no more than one joint per side of the frame.

To enable good square alignment, factory-cut ends should be butted the same to those cut on site. A Jointing Strip should be used to align and attach the two abutting sections as sections are being installed. Aluminium foil tape (no less than 100 mm wide) should be applied around the joint to prevent water tracking.

Packaging and Storage:

The polyethylene packaging of Kingspan Insulation products is fully recyclable. The packaging should not be considered sufficient for outside protection. The boards should be stored inside a well-ventilated building. If, however, indoor storage is not an option, then they should be stored in a dry environment, stacked clear of the ground, and protected with an opaque and weatherproof material. Take care when transporting, handling, and storing the insulation materials to prevent damage occurring. The ThermAbate sections and frames should be propped vertically and not exposed to excessive heat to prevent product distortion. Do not take the material out of their packaging until installation is ready for immediate use and restore at the end of each working day.

How is Thermabate installed? – Masonry Cavity Walls

Install Thermabate as the wall is being assembled by installing individual sections or creating the frame first and the installing (See below). Keyring mortar from bed joints to the fins on the casing.
When the wall reaches the sill level place the Thermabate into the cavity. Ensure it is supported until the wall is constructed.
Continue to build the wall around the jambs of the frame and attach fixing ties to the tees at the back of the thermabate casing and embed them into the mortar joins.
Timber bracings and profile brackets can be used to keep the frame in shape whilst the wall is being built. Once the wall has been constructed remove the timber and brackets, these can be reused. The frame can then be fixed to the masonry with a suitable fixing throught the wholes in the flange.

Installing Individual Sections:
Install the sill, jamb, and head sections of the frame individually as the walls is being built.
Sills – cut the sections to match the precise width of the opening.
Jambs – cut sections long enough overhang the sill by 50mm and remove the flange as necessary so the section can fit into the cavity under the sill edge of opening.
Head – cut the section long enough to overhang the jambs by 50mm each side and remove the flange as necessary to ensure fit.

Fabricating Frames on Site:
The Thermabate frame should be constructed on site and installed as one unit as a whole. The wall should then be constructed around the frame.
Cut the sections in the same way as the above section and assemble on a level surface to form a frame. Securely fix Profit Brackets in each 90-degree corner.
