Rockwool Rainscreen Duo Slabs are a stone wool insulation product specifically designed for use within ventilated cladding systems, as well as sealed systems such as curtain walling. This product is manufactured using Dual Density technology, the outer surface of each slab includes a distinctly higher density than the underside. This provides a firm and robust surface for the application of fixings, while the resilient underside can accommodate unevenness in the substrate.

Rainscreen Duo Slab

The Rainscreen duo Slabs are available in sizes 600mm by 1200mm and 1000mm, with thicknesses ranging from 60mm to 225mm. The slabs provide thermal conductivity of 0.034W/mK or 0.035W/mK.

Key Features:

  • Wind resistance
  • Water-resistant yet breathable
  • Acoustic performance
  • Condensation control
  • Can be recycled and reprocessed, reducing landfill costs, with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and Global Warming Potential (GWP)
  • Designed for use on high rise buildings
  • Fewer fixings are required for installation compared to standard stone wool slabs
  • Cost-effective solution
  • Robust front face resists damage and over-driving of fixings

Once installed, the higher density outer surface works in combination with a factory-applied water-repelling agent to give improved resistance to rain ingress during construction. The product can be easily fitted around brackets and other details, when tightly butted, adjoining slabs effectively ‘knit’ together to provide a continuous insulating layer, reducing heat losses that would otherwise be caused by gaps.

Rainscreen duo slabs are tightly packed and are lightweight making cutting, handling and installing easy. The Rainscreen packaging is for short term protection only. For long term protection the slabs should be stored in a dry space and if indoor storage is not an option the relevant weather-proofing materials should be applied. If you have ordered a pallet size of the insulation materials a weather-proof hood should be provided for outside protection The slabs can be cut if necessary, using an insulation saw or a sharp blade.

As demonstrated by independent in-situ laboratory testing, Rainscreen Duo Slab helps to reduce the transfer of airborne noise – with results for typical systems as high as Rw62dB.

Wind resistance rainscreen duo slabs have successfully undergone wind resistance testing by the building research establishment. Wind loading fatigue tests were used to replicate wind in the performance of the slabs when fully exposed and subjected to fluctuating wind loads during the construction stages of buildings. The tests simulated and exceeded the maximum UK basic wind speed of 56 m/s as defined by BS CP3: Chapter 5: Part 2: 1972.

Water-resistant Rockwool stone wool resists liquid water due to its fibre orientation and water-repellent additives. The vapour resistivity of ROCKWOOL mineral wool is 5.9MNs/gm. The slabs, therefore, reduce the risk of condensation, allowing natural drying-out of the structure.

Rockwool Rainscreen Duo Slabs can be installed in a range of methods. These methods include:

  • Ventilated cladding systems
  • Curtain walling
  • Steel frame or timber frame with a masonry outer leaf

How to install Rockwool Rainscreen Duo Slabs

Installation Notes – For use on a steel frame, timber frame, or masonry walls in conjunction with cladding.

  • It is recommended that the construction application is arranged in a way that ensures the insulation material is not left exposed, or if exposer is unavoidable, that it is for a very short period of time. While Rockwool insulation is manufactured with a water-repelling agent and is resistant to wind and rain, it is not designed to offer indefinite protection again extreme weather conditions. Depending on the nature of the substrate, a protective membrane may be required.
  • Subjecting Rainscreen Duo Slab to any level of exposure is dependent on a visual inspection of the insulation prior to the installation of the cladding. In the unlikely event that a slab should have become physically damaged or otherwise contaminated, it should not be used, and a new slab should be used to replace it. Once the weatherproof layer is installed, the resulting ventilated cavity will ensure that any wetted slabs will naturally dry out, regaining all their original performance and properties.

Installing Rockwool Rainscreen

Ensure the product matches the measurements required for the jobs and the thickness matched the depth of the necessary wall frame.
The product should be installed with the printed patterned side facing outwards where appropriate.
Slabs being joint should be butted together at all vertical and horizontal joints. The horizontal joints of the insulation should be staggered in agreement with good practice.
Fixings should have a minimum head diameter of 70 mm. A typical fixing pattern has three fixings per square metre with one metal fixing at the centre of every slab.
The product should be cut and tightly fitted around cladding support elements.
For a typical installation, a breathable membrane is placed between the sheathing board and the product. A vapour control layer (VCL) is placed between the plasterboard and the frame.

Please note this is just a guide and a professional should always be consulted before beginning any construction works on your property.
