Pitched roof insulation is insulation materials that are installed into pitched roofs to improve the thermal conductivity of the residential or commercial building. The materials are frequently made up of high-performance, rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) featuring foil facings on both sides or mineral wool and other forms of insulation depending on the method of installation applied. At Trade Insulations, we offer the very best prices on pitched roof insulation.

How is pitched roof insulation installed?

Pitched roofs are insulated within the property usually within the loft space. To insulate a pitched roof the space between the rafters in the roof needs to be measured. The chosen insulation material can then be measured and cut to size usually with a Stanley knife or a hand saw. Note that the spaces between the rafters may not be the same size in each rafter so each space needs to be measured separately. The insulation can then be fitted into the rafters, foil tape can then be applied to the butted edges of the material and where the insulation and the rafters join to prevent thermal bridging. If the roof is not being used for a living space, insulation boards can then be laid horizontally over the rafters and fixed to the joists.

  • If you want your loft for a living space the roof, walls, and floor will need to be insulated.
  • Always make sure the correct materials are applied around windows, doors, and vents to avoid thermal bridging.

Why do I need pitched roof insulation?

Heat rises within a property so pitched roof insulation can prevent the heat from being lost through the roof. This will provide a more comfortable living or working space as well as save money on yearly energy bills. By insulating your residential or commercial space it will make the property more energy-efficient and will contribute to the prevention of global warming. Specific pitched roof insulation materials can also suit other needs such as moisture resistance, rot proofing, fire resistance and can also add an acoustic advantage.
When installing pitched roof insulation take safety measures to ensure insulation is fitted correctly around electrical sockets, wires, and ventilation spaces, or the correct procedures are put into place to remove these components.
Always consult a building professional when insulating your roof to prevent the wrong insulation from being installed and the possibility of damaging your property.
Some roofs are harder to reach and not accessible in which case a specialist can be called in with the correct tools to insulate the roof.

Building Regulations
Relevant building regulations will need to be met when insulation your roof. Installers will usually arrange this however it is your responsibility to assure you are complying with regulations.
The Roof should achieve a U-value of no more than 0.20 W/m2K, if possible. The U-value is calculated by measuring how quickly heat will travel through the roof.

Kingspan TP10
